Volunteer Spotlight: Robert

A man in a gray suit with a name tag smiles in an office setting. A cityscape view is visible through a window.

Robert fell in love with the library as a middle schooler walking home from school. It opened the world to him and shaped his lifelong appreciation of learning, exploring, and belonging.

How long have you served on the Board of Directors and what is your current office?

I have served on the FWPL Board for almost two years.

What committees have you served on?

I’ve supported FWPL initiatives as needed, with a particular focus on technology and education-related ideas and projects. I currently serve on the Partners & Promotions Committee and I’m part of the Technology Advisors group.

What FWPL related event are you looking forward to in 2026?

I’m looking forward to FWPL programs that highlight learning, innovation, and community but especially opportunities that help people explore emerging technology like AI and robotics in a simple digestible way.

Can you share all the ways you volunteer? How many hours do you volunteer per month? Do you have a favorite task?

I volunteer through board service and by supporting the ideas, planning, and support for FWPL projects and events. My volunteer time varies month to month, but when my health allows I stay engaged. My favorite part providing any input that will help develop the library and the community.

What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?

I developed a deep affection for the library long before I ever joined the Friends. When I was in middle school, I would walk home and stop at the library on the way. It became a refuge for an isolated young boy and it opened the whole world to me. Supporting FWPL feels personal and it’s a way to give back to a place that had a real impact on my life.

What’s your favorite genre when shopping for a book to read?

Science fiction and especially classic writers like Philip K. Dick, Bradbury, Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.

What are you currently reading?

Right now, I’m reading technical journals related to programming and artificial intelligence.

Favorite book you’ve found in our used bookstore or at a recent sale?

One of my all-time favorites is The Mote in God’s Eye (Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle). When I’m shopping at a book sale or in the bookstore, I’m always on the lookout for similar titles.

Why should someone become a member of FWPL?

It’s a direct, practical way to support the library beyond just mental support. Membership helps fund programs, strengthens community engagement, and keeps the library as a place where anyone can learn, explore, and connect with the world.

Do you belong to a book club? What has been your club’s favorite read?

I’m not currently in a book club, but I’d like to join one.

What are your other hobbies?

I was a technology instructor, so a lot of my hobbies revolve around technology and science. I enjoy learning new things and hands-on projects. I also like staying active and spending time with family.

Do you have anything else you’d like to share?

The library mattered to me when I was young because it was open to everyone and they didn't ask anything from you except curiosity and to behave yourself. I love that FWPL still offers that same doorway especially for kids who need a safe place to land and a bigger world to discover.
