Volunteer Spotlight: Beatriz
Please welcome Beatriz, the Friends newest volunteer. Beatriz is a retired hotel concierge who loves books, which is a perfect combination to work in the Used Bookstore. A lifelong learner who loves books, history, and all things tech, she’s currently mastering 3D printing at the library.

How long have you been a Friends of Wichita Public Library (FWPL) volunteer?
I'm a new volunteer. I've been training with experienced bookstore volunteers since the beginning of September.
What type of volunteer work do you do for Friends?
I will be staffing a shift at the bookstore. Eventually I'd like to volunteer for other things like book sales. I love to learn. And this is a great learning opportunity for me.
Can you share all the ways you have used your talents for FWPL?
I love books and I enjoy people. I used to be a concierge at a major hotel on the east coast before I retired, so I developed a lot of people skills there that I can put to use in the bookstore. I also have some technology skills and I really enjoy sharing information with people.
What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?
I moved to Wichita three years ago and the library is one of the best things that happened to me. I'm a huge fan of technology and I've enjoyed the classes they offer here. I'm currently taking a 3D printing class. I just love learning new skills and acquiring knowledge.
What's your favorite genre when shopping for a book to read?
Biographies. The last one I read was about Leonardo da Vinci. He’s a fascinating person who gave his gifts to the world.
What are you currently reading?
I just started a new book, "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. You can change and improve things in your life if you try.
Why should someone become a member of FWPL?
Because it’s the best thing you can do in your life.
Do you belong to a book club?
Not at this moment but I would love to join one.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I cannot express enough my gratitude for this wonderful opportunity. English is not my first language, so volunteering helps me practice, learn, and improve my communication. I used to live in Boston and I tell all my friends that Wichita is a hidden jewel. I love history. There’s lots of history here and things are more affordable. Wichita is a great place.
