Susan prefers to support the Friends of the Wichita Public Library from behind the scenes - helping update the website, managing memberships, and creating the Friends newsletter. She’s currently into reading historical fiction and loves a dual timeline story.

How long have you been a Friends volunteer?

I've been a Friends volunteer for two years.

How long have you served on the Board of Directors and what is your current office? I've been on the Board for two years and am currently co-chair of the Partner & Promotions Committee.

What FWPL-related event are you looking forward to in 2026? Or, which one have you enjoyed the most so far this year?

The pop-up events with community partners like local breweries and coffee shops have been fun, and people seem to really enjoy the “blind date with a book” purchase options. Our ice cream socials got us out to all the library branches in the city!

Can you share all the ways you volunteer? Do you have a favorite task or one that is the most rewarding?

I tend to work behind the scenes, helping to maintain the Friends website and creating and sending out the Friends emails. I have also helped at the book sales.

What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?

I'm not even sure where I first heard the Friends were looking for volunteers, but it felt like a natural fit. Libraries matter, and being part of an organization that offers so much for Wichitans is a meaningful way to support the community.

What's your favorite genre when shopping for a book to read?

Lately I've been into historical fiction, especially if it features a strong female character. But I also enjoy a good thriller or something light and cozy. I participate in the ReadICT annual challenge and that helps me explore other categories of books.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished "The Things We Leave Unfinished" by Rebecca Yarros - I do love a dual timeline book! I’m also about halfway through "The Calamity Club" and listening to "The Life We Bury" by Allen Eskens.

Favorite book you've found in our used bookstore or at a recent sale?

I have to come clean - I actually haven't bought any books from the Friends Used Bookstore or at a book sale yet! I have bought merch in the bookstore - I love the t-shirts and mugs.

Why should someone become a member of FWPL?

If you believe in the power of literacy and supporting the Library system, the Friends is for you. Our memberships can help make a real difference. For example, a $35 Avid Reader membership covers the cost of a Book-a-Librarian appointment for research or technology help.

Do you belong to a book club? What has been your club's favorite read?

I don't belong to a book club. I enjoy the freedom of choosing my next book with no deadlines or assigned reads. I love the concept of the Silent Book Clubs, where you just show up, read whatever you want, and enjoy the company of fellow readers. The library has one, and there are a few others around locally.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I’ve learned so much about the impact and value of community libraries by volunteering. Libraries are so much more than books!
