For nine years, Brian Blackerby has been a cornerstone of the Friends of the Wichita Public Library. With seven years of Board service, his commitment runs deep. Inspired by a mother who was an elementary school librarian, Brian believes that "reading is a success multiplier."
How long have you been a Friends volunteer?
Nine years.
How long have you served on the Board of Directors?
A total of 7 years.
Which offices have you held while on the Board besides VP and President?
I served as Treasurer the first six years.
What FWPL-related event are you looking forward to in 2026?
Helping to celebrate and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the library system.
I know that you've been a steady volunteer at every book sale. Are there other ways you've volunteered? It’s been the book sale primarily.
What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?
My mother was an elementary school librarian and according to my wife, books are the foundation for her success in life. I believe that reading is a success multiplier and libraries are the most important and under-utilized resource to a community.
I believe you're an avid reader. What's your favorite genre?
Not as avid as I would like – most of my reading hours are in the middle of the night. Dystopian fiction is my favorite.
Favorite book you've found in our used bookstore or at a recent sale?
A Cycling Lexicon – Bicycle Headbadges from a Bygone Era. It’s more of a coffee table book, but was a really neat find.
Anything else you'd like to address?
I’m looking forward to the 150th commemoration and continuing to find ways to build on our momentum. It feels like the COVID hangover has finally passed and we can bring new and exciting ideas to the Friends and Wichita library system.
We're looking for library enthusiasts to join our board! If you're interested in this volunteer opportunity, send us an email at friends@wichitalibrary.org
