Volunteer Spotlight: Erin Shields, outgoing Friends Board President

Updated: Jan 13

The Friends of the Wichita Public Library wouldn't exist without our dedicated volunteers. As we welcome new board leaders, this is a good time to spotlight Erin Shields, FWPL outgoing Board President.

Brian Blackerby, FWPL incoming president, encouraged Erin to get involved with the Friends five years ago and says her collaborative approach has expanded the Friends community presence.

"Erin has been a tremendous leader and connector for the Friends as she has built stronger relationships across all of the library related boards and organizations," he shared. "She has helped integrate wonderful, new board members and facilitated the adoption of new ideas to make Friends more visible in the community."

How long have you been a Friends volunteer?

I first became a Friends volunteer when I joined the board in April 2021.

What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?

A close friend, incoming FWPL President Brian Blackerby, approached me about joining. After living through 2020, I had decided to be more choosy about how I spent my time. The Friends provided a perfect scenario where my volunteer hours could: 1) support something I care deeply about, and 2) be spent with people who have a shared love for literacy and libraries.

What has been your most memorable accomplishment as President?

The Board's collaboration with the Wichita Public Library on our merchandise launch has been a real pleasure to be a part of. Establishing our inventory and sales processes was bumpy at first, but we have an excellent team of staff and volunteers who deftly ironed out the kinks and continue to improve our procedures.

Like many of our Board members, you're an avid reader. What's your favorite genre?

I usually have two or three books going at once: One audiobook to listen to while driving, walking, and doing chores. Another traditional print book for bedtime, lunch breaks, and lazy weekend mornings. And an e-book for when bringing my print books along isn't convenient. I don't think I could pick a favorite genre, honestly. This year I have been re-reading the Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell (I have been collecting the whole series at our book sales!). For my audiobooks, I really enjoy domestic thrillers like those from B.A. Paris and Freida McFadden.

How do you feel about the Board's work moving forward?

Our Board found so much momentum and enthusiasm this year. I think our secret sauce was letting people play to their strengths and trusting each other to get the job done. I have no doubt that Brian's experience and passion will keep us moving in the right direction, allowing the Friends to continue making operational improvements so that more of the funds we bring in can go back to supporting the library.

We're looking for library enthusiasts to join our board! If you're interested in this volunteer opportunity, send us an email at friends@wichitalibrary.org
