For five years, Bobbie has helped sort, analyze, and pack books. She is part of the crew who decides which books go to the bookstore, sales, or special projects, and which are hidden treasures. A retired professional with a librarian mom, Bobbie proves the best second act starts with a good book.

How long have you been a Friends of Wichita Public Library (FWPL) volunteer?

I began volunteering at FWPL in September 2021 - so five years.

What type of volunteer work do you do for Friends?

I work behind the scenes sorting books. We determine which books go to the bookstore and which go to the book sales, and when books cannot be used. We select books for a variety of special projects for the library or other local groups like the Lord’s Diner or Linwood Recreation Center. We also identify books that may be of value for online sales or signed books.

What FWPL-related event have you enjoyed in 2026?

Since starting with FWPL, I have attended a number of volunteer luncheons and assisted at quite a few book sales.

Can you share all the ways you have used your talents for FWPL?

I’m a very organized and analytical person. That helps when I'm separating books and packing boxes.

What made you initially decide to become involved with FWPL?

As I approached retirement, I wanted to become involved with something completely different than what I did professionally. I loved reading and my mother was a librarian so something at the library seemed like a natural fit.

What's your favorite genre when shopping for a book to read?

I typically read books in the fiction or mystery genres, but occasionally enjoy autobiographies.

What are you currently reading?

Currently, I’m reading “Murder at the Hotel Orient” by Alessandra Ranelli.

Why should someone become a member of FWPL?

In addition to simply supporting the library, there are great benefits to being a member. Friends members get first chance at book sales when the best selection of books are available and a coupon to use in the bookstore.

Do you belong to a book club?

I’m not a member of a book club. My professional career didn’t allow me to read on anyone else’s schedule and I’ve not picked it up in retirement.
