Volunteer Spotlight: Cindy

Our library runs on heart and helping hands. Get to know the remarkable volunteers who give their time, energy, and passion to support our the library system.

How long have you been a Friends volunteer? Three years.

How often do you volunteer?

I volunteer weekly at the sales desk in the used bookstore. I also help out during used book sales by staffing the used bookstore in case people want to shop there, too.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering in the bookstore?

The people! We welcome everyone and we have an interesting mix of customers. I also enjoy the other bookstore volunteers. We have a fantastic group.

What are the benefits of volunteering regularly at the bookstore?

We get to select a free book from the store when we complete our weekly shift. I tend to pick up children's books that I donate to my church's preschool program.

What do you read in your spare time?

Mostly I enjoy nonfiction. I also read a lot of social and politically relevant books. My book club recently read The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt and How to Say Stand Up to a Dictator by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa. I also like cookbooks and mysteries.

Favorite book you've found in our used bookstore or at a recent sale?

I really enjoy the King Arthur Baker's 200th Anniversary Cookbook I picked up at our used bookstore. It includes the company's fascinating history. King Arthur is America's oldest flour company and was founded during George Washington's presidency.

What led to your enjoyment of reading?

My parents emphasized the importance of education. Both were avid readers and our home was filled with books. I couldn't wait to learn how to read as a child.

Other causes you believe in?

I support Best Friends Animal Society and the importance of adopting shelter animals. My new rescue and I are avid year-round walkers.
