More than books: How libraries help build safer communities

Updated: 6 days ago

The big picture Most people think of libraries as places for books and storytimes. But research shows they're also a public safety tool.

“We find within the nearby proximity of the library; there is a substantial reduction in frequency of burglaries, vandalism, robberies, fraud, and assaults,” wrote Amir B. Ferriera Neto, Jennifer Nowicki, and Shishir Shakya (2023, Journal of Cultural Economics study: Do public libraries help mitigate crime? Evidence from Kansas City, Missouri).

Why it matters Wichita Libraries are neighborhood gathering places afterschool and in summertime, with spaces for programming and activities that build skills and confidence, keeping at-risk kids safe and occupied. Childhood literacy reduces the likelihood of incarceration during their lifetime.

Ensure the library remains a safe haven

As the City Council is discussing next year's budget, now is the time to let our local leaders know why investing in Wichita's libraries that matter. If the Library does not receive adequate funding, services or hours could be reduced.
